I, Lead Pastor Steve Fish, think that these verses from Isaiah 63:7-9 are intimately pertinent to the Oak Harbor United Brethren Church. I think they are so applicable that we can directly say, "Yes, the many good things He has done for the Oak Harbor United Brethren Church, according to His compassion and many kindnesses!" Recently, God has given us a gift to show how true these words are for us. As you read what follows about the above picture, please know that God has carried this local body of believers through some very difficult times in order that His great purpose of bringing glory to Himself might be fulfilled here in this place - may He pour out the power of His Spirit in order to accomplish all that He purposes to do!
Before I write more I want to say one thing very clearly. God works most in our everyday life experiences; it is only occasionally (at least in my experience and opinion) that He gives us something extraordinary like what is to follow. I have debated within myself as to how best to share what I have written below with others. Obviously, this is the path I chose. I have placed this here on our site and not on the welcome page because I believe that this extraordinary event needs to be kept in perspective - it is one gift of the many numerous blessing God pours on us each day! But I also do believe strongly that this is a particular gift to all of us and as such this picture and its story should be shared publicly.
I took this photograph on a day when it had rained the entire morning. I was setting up our new website and wanted to get a picture of our church building to place on the site. So, when there was a small pocket in the afternoon when the sun burst through the clouds, I grabbed my digital camera and hurried outside. But when I went to get a picture of the church a harsh reality set in, there is really not a good perspective to get a nice looking picture of our church building. So, I decided to improvise and I chose to get a picture of the outside of our dome (in this way I could capture a predominate shape of our building that everyone would recognize and I thought to myself that we could type text in the blue sky area.) I climbed up on the shed on the backside of our building and snapped three pictures and then headed back into the church building to upload them into my computer. It was not long before it started to rain again, and it did so the entire remainder of the day - there was only a small pocket of time for me to take pictures that day; I am amazed that I even chose to go out to snap shots at all.
When I went back I picked one of the three that appealed to me the most - the one you see at the top of this page. But I could not get the picture to email to our webmaster, Scott Frank, no matter how hard I tried. I gave up during the rest of the day, but late that night I decided to try again at home. Again, I was unsuccessful so with some exasperation and frustration I leaned back in my chair to give myself a moment. That's when I looked at the picture in a new way. And when I did I about fell out of my chair. Now, I believe this picture is a gift from God to the Oak Harbor United Brethren Church. Go back after reading this and re-read the Isaiah passage again. And then, look directly above the center of the dome. Do you see a messenger from God? |
